DLI Association Branch Bulletin - April 2006       issued by the Secretary, Mr. Kevin Storey, BEM

The Regimental Secretaries met at the Army & Navy Club London on Thursday 20 April 2006.

The following items from the minutes are printed for information purposes only.*

Customs & Traditions*

The Chairman informed the meeting that a Working Group was compiling a Compendium on Customs & Traditions.  The secretaries present requested sight of this before publication.

Regimental Property*

The question of the future control, maintenance and insurance of regimental and battalion property in the future was discussed.   Whilst there was no suggestion that current ownership should be altered, management and control might require some centralisation.   Everyone had different systems which would need analysis before any decisions were reached.

LI Reunion 2006*

The Chairman briefed the Meeting on changes to the organisation of the Reunion.   There would be no Bar Marquee at Nescliffe although bar facilities would be available, as organised by the caterers.

The aim was to raise the standard of facilities provided and to this end the Reunion Dinner on Saturday would be a served meal in a smart marquee, separate from the Bar Marquee at Copthorne Barracks.

It was agreed that TV screens would be needed to enable members to watch the football against Paraguay.

Regimental Associations*

The Chairman stated that a Working Group was looking at the way ahead for the Associations after formation of The Rifles and did not therefore intend to go into detail on control funding etc.

The Journal*

The Chairman asked for views on The Rifles Journal.   It was generally agreed that the title should be “The Bugle”.

It was agreed that the frequency of publication needed to be twice annually.   However restrictions on size would probably mean much reduced Association notes.   Counties would only have one page for these and local Association newsletters etc would have to meet local demand.

Distribution and costs were problems that needed resolution.

Freedom & Civic Privileges*

After discussion it was agreed that a standard letter from the Colonel of the Regiment would need to be prepared.   This should be distributed to the relevant Cities, Boroughs etc of current Civic Privileges asking for their extension to the new Regiment.   Freedoms would need to be exercised and this would necessarily fall to the UK based regular battalions.   Freedoms should be ‘earned’ by the new Regiment from current operational experience.

Alliances & Affiliations*

The Regimental Secretary of The Rifles would need to review all alliances and affiliations.

Other Issues

DLI Web Site

Members may be interested to know that a new DLI web site is now up and running at  http://www.faithfuldurhams.com

It was designed and installed by Peter Nelson who is on the production team of the Durham Bugle.

Clothing Stock

An order for fleeces, sweatshirts, polo shirts and V necked pullovers has been placed with our suppliers and branches may wish to advise their members that they will be available in about two weeks.

Commando Presentation

The Newcastle Branch of the Commando Association wishes to present to the DLI Association a statuette of a WWII Commando and has suggested that the presentation be made at their premises in Newcastle on Thursday 25 May 2006.   Perhaps branches may wish to inform the Light Infantry Office if any of their members wish to attend on that evening at 1900hrs.   You will be informed of venue location when full details are known.

John Byrne VC - Castlecomer

As previously notified a group of people in Castlecomer, the birth place of John Byrne, the Regiments first VC are erecting a plaque to the memory of their local hero.   The Association is funding the erection.  We have been advised that they would like the ceremony to take place on Monday 5 June 2006 which is a Bank Holiday in Ireland.

I have made tentative enquiries regarding the possibility of some Association members travelling to Ireland to take part in the dedication.   Ireland is expensive - Sun Holidays (UK) have quoted £317 per person (for 41 to 49 passengers) or £335 per person (for 30 to 40 passengers.  These prices include return coach travel from Durham to Athy, return ferry crossing from Holyhead to Dublin/Dun Loaghaire. 4 nights accommodation in The Carlton Abbey Hotel, County Kildare on half board basis plus 2 full day tours.   The dates would be from Friday 2 June until Tuesday the 6th of June.  The LI Office would need to know by Friday 5 May if anyone was interested.

If the response is poor then individual travel may be an option i.e. flights from Newcastle to Dublin and travel from Dublin to Castlecomer (Kilkenny) by rail or road,
