John Byrne VC
DCM
The Secretary
and two members of the Association visited Castlecomer, Co. Kilkenny from 14th
to 17th October (at their own expense), and participated in the unveiling of a
plaque honouring John Byrne VC DCM, the Regiment's first VC.
The village
of Castlecomer was the birthplace of John Byrne and many of his descendants
attended the ceremony.
We also
visited the Eglish (sic) cemetery at Derrinlough, Co. Ofally where John Murray,
our second VC, was buried with full military honours in 1912.
Although his
resting place is not identifiable, we believe that he is buried in the family
plot which is identifiable. A full account will be given at the Executive
Meeting.
