8th May                                                                         In Search of Tom

In this moving new book 'In Search of Tom', George Rodgers tells the story of his search for the burial place of his brother, Tom.

Tom Rodgers served with 2DLI and was known to have been killed in action at St Venant, France on 27th May 1940. He was one of the rearguard trying to hold back the German advance which was to lead to the Dunkirk evacuation. His final resting place, though, was a mystery and a source of particular grief to his father who had witnessed the dismemberment of corpses by shellfire during his own war service in the Great War. As his father was dying in 1959 George promised to find out what had happened to Tom.

Tom's girlfriend, Annie Warriner, kept a treasured photograph which helped establish his identity and, with the aid of the St Venant historical association, George learned that Tom's body, together with those of the men killed with him, had been moved. The exact location of his unmarked grave was pin-pointed.  George had kept his promise and found his brother again!

The book is published by Cormorant Publishing of Hartlepool at a cost of £7.99

4th April 2008                                                                  Tommy Statuettes

The Limited Edition 'Tommy' statuettes are now sold out!

This very popular figure of which only 500 were produced has come to the end of its production run and, unfortunately, for some who have ordered too late their orders cannot now be met.

Members attending the 2008 Annual General Meeting of The Friends of The Durham Light Infantry Museum were told that it is hoped that the WW2 'Tommy' statuette may be produced later in 2008. Indications of interest would be appreciated (please contact The DLI Association Secretary on 0191 3865496).

The 2008 Annual General Meeting of The Friends of The Durham Light Infantry Museum was held on Saturday 15th March at the Durham County Record Office.

After a buffet lunch the members present were shown a variety of archive material on special display and given a conducted tour of the strongrooms.

18th February 2008                                                   Freedom for The Rifles

Durham City yesterday granted The Rifles the rarely bestowed honour of the Freedom of the City.

The regiment now has the right to march through the city as did its predecessor regiments, The Durham Light Infantry and The Light Infantry did in years gone by.

The Freedom Scroll was presented to 3 Rifles by the Mayor of Durham, Bob Wynn, in the Market Place in Durham during the morning following a service in the Cathedral.

The Freedom Parade which included 3 Rifles, the Band and Bugles, Cadets and members of The Durham Light Infantry Association was followed by a Civic Reception in the Town Hall.

13th February 2008                                                Private James Henderson

A lady walking her dogs recovered a medal lying in a pile of dirt and since then the search has been on to find out more about the man named on it and how the medal came to be lost or discarded.

The medal, found at Consett, belonged to Private James Henderson who served with the 10th Battalion of the Durham Light Infantry.

All that is known about him is that he lived in Newcastle and was married to Catherine.

The Commonwealth War Graves Commission has a record of his death as having taken place in France on July 31st 1915.

29th December 2007                                                             Death of Ken Lovell

We have been told that Ken Lovell died very peacefully and with dignity on 23rd December 2007.

His body will be received into church on the evening of Sunday 6th January 2008 at 8pm and a short service will follow.

His requiem mass will be held at Our Lady of Lourdes Church, 51 Cambridge Park Wanstead, London E11 2PR at 10.30am on Monday 7th January 2008 followed by burial at Manor Park Cemetery.

All are welcome to attend and are invited back to the church hall for refreshments.

Ken was a great supporter and friend of the DLI Association and well-known to many members.  He served with 16 DLI during the Second World War and wrote of his experiences in Italy in The Durham Bugle. His stories of the counter attack at Hospital Hill, Solerno and the events in the Corpo di Cava area bore witness to his remarkable memory and his brave fight with illness over a long period was an inspiration to all.  His death is a very sad loss.

Click to read an Obituary by Maj Donald McDonald, editor of The Durham Bugle. An appreciation of Ken's life is planned for the next issue of the magazine.
